THE HAPPY FAILURE

2016, Westerly, Rhode Island

The story of Wooster Battery begins 120 years ago, when the US Millitary decided to buid a millitary complex of forts to protect New York City via Long Island Sound. Unfortunately, Wooster Battery proved to be the weakest link in the chain of fort when they found its fatal flaw in its orientation. The battery could not be realigned to address a bind spot and had to be abandoned.

This thesis project explores how we deal with structures that have become useless due to a specific failure. Observations are taken from a deep analysis of the site to determine the potential of the existing structure and its surrounding. In some cases, the fatal flaw may prove to be the element that makes a building best suited to a new use.

In this way we reposition a failure as an opportunity or a starting point to alter the existing. This thesis argues for the acceptance of faults, and that the best approach is to enhancing these characteristic to reach a site’s full potential.

Located in Napatree Point , Westerly, Rhode Island , now Wooster Battery serves a better purpose. As an accomodation alternatives, here to experience one of the most beautiful natural environtments and night sky area in Rhode Island
